another monday in rain

Live Analysis: Canada Beats the U.S. for Gold Medal
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Instead, they played the old-fashioned, knock-down, went-to-a-wrestling-match-and-a-hockey-game-broke-out version. Players were sent flying over boards, onto opposing benches, into crammed corners with sharpened elbows.

Both parties fall prey to make-believe politics

By Robert J. Samuelson
Monday, March 1, 2010

There is a make-believe quality to modern American politics: People -- and this applies across the political spectrum -- say things that are stupid, misleading or unattainable and think (or pretend) that these very same things are desirable, candid and realistic. A disconnect between the language of politics and the nation's actual problems is growing. The politics of the budget offer a splendid example.

Render Unto C Street

Published: February 28, 2010

It is not unusual for members of Congress to arrange group rentals in Washington to share housing costs and, for some, underline their continuing “outsider” status. What is highly unusual, and unjustifiable, is the tax-exempt status as a religious institution enjoyed by a boarding house called the C Street Center that caters to conservative Christian lawmakers.

You’re So Vain

Financial Reform Endgame

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: February 28, 2010

So here’s the situation. We’ve been through the second-worst financial crisis in the history of the world, and we’ve barely begun to recover: 29 million Americans either can’t find jobs or can’t find full-time work. Yet all momentum for serious banking reform has been lost. The question now seems to be whether we’ll get a watered-down bill or no bill at all. And I hate to say this, but the second option is starting to look preferable.

Aysley Dunbar
