That ’30s Show

By PAUL KRUGMAN

O.K., Thursday’s jobs report settles it. We’re going to need a bigger stimulus. But does the president know that?

Let’s do the math.

Since the recession began, the U.S. economy has lost 6 ½ million jobs — and as that grim employment report confirmed, it’s continuing to lose jobs at a rapid pace. Once you take into account the 100,000-plus new jobs that we need each month just to keep up with a growing population, we’re about 8 ½ million jobs in the hole.

Music Royalties Group Is Moving Jobs Out of New York
By Patrick McGeehan

The entity that collects royalties almost every time somebody plays a Michael Jackson tune is exporting about 32 jobs to Nashville as it prepares to move from Midtown to the 7 World Trade Center office tower.

The organization, Broadcast Music Inc., which collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers and music publishers, including Mr. Jackson, who died last Thursday at age 50, has gradually shifted the bulk of its jobs to Music Row in Nashville from West 57th Street in Manhattan, said Robbin Ahrold, a spokesman for B.M.I. It now has about 140 jobs in the city, down from a peak of about 500, and plans to move about 110 of them into two floors of 7 World Trade Center in the spring.

Schwarzenegger can't terminate California money woes
Thu Jul 2, 2009 3:18pm EDT

By Jim Christie and Peter Henderson - Analysis

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Staving off California's financial meltdown will be the toughest role ever for Hollywood hero Arnold Schwarzenegger as he enters the last 18 months of his governorship.

The most populous and often trend-setting U.S. state has racked up a $26.3 billion budget gap -- about a quarter of its total annual spending -- and could run out of cash this month if its books are not balanced.

Financial woes in California, home to both Hollywood and high-tech hub Silicon Valley, are so severe that some state officials have begged Washington for financial aid.

Paying for Mr. Madoff

Friday, July 3, 2009

After reading the June 30 front-page story "Madoff Sentenced to 150 Years," I had a question regarding Bernard L. Madoff and other criminals sentenced to significant jail terms. Instead of making the taxpayer foot the bill for Mr. Madoff's imprisonment, could we not use his Social Security benefits to offset the costs of his incarceration?
