His Kind of Shell-Shocked Town

As cutbacks loom in every sector of New York City’s economic life, the specter of the 1970s, with all of its deprivations and depredations, seems increasingly near as well. This being New York, of course, those days of near bankruptcy, graffiti-scarred subway cars, escalating crime rates and a dwindling population as the faint of heart fled to easier climes, evoke a fond nostalgia for some.

A Guest Guitarist Who Needed No Introduction

Eric Clapton got right down to business with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater on Thursday night. Taking the stage to a welcoming roar — his guest turn, while unannounced, was by no means an airtight secret — he picked up his light blue Stratocaster and dug into “Key to the Highway,” a Big Bill Broonzy tune. As a blues shuffle, it was a good fit all around, and Mr. Clapton, on vocals as well as on guitar, gave it purpose and presence.
