THE POP LIFE

''What is the price of experience?'' asks Van Morrison on his recent album, ''A Sense of Wonder'' (Mercury), quoting the British visionary poet William Blake. ''Do men buy it for a song?/Or wisdom for a dance in the street? No, it is bought with the price/Of all that a man hath/Wisdom is sold in the desolate market where none come to buy.''

FOLK-ROCK:RICHARD THOMPSON'S IDIOM TRANSCENDS FASHION

By JOHN ROCKWELL
Published: May 19, 1982
Richard Thompson has the misfortune of being elegantly stylish at what he does but of doing it when his idiom is out of fashion in the marketplace. Fortunately, his kind of music, British-American folkrock, is so basic in its appeal that it may transcend fashion altogether, outlasting the current fad for punk and corporate rock. The audience Monday night at the Bottom Line was no mere reunion of nostalgists; its enthusiasm seemed a clear recognition of Mr. Thompson's importance.

A Jam Band in an Arena, Cognizant of Geography
By JON PARELES

Published: November 3, 2003

In an improbable punk-rock tribute, Widespread Panic knocked out three Ramones songs at Madison Square Garden on Friday, its first of two nights there. No matter that the Ramones' pithy songs arose as a reaction to the kind of leisurely jamming that has made Widespread Panic a touring phenomenon since the mid-1980's. As it claimed its arena-size audience in New York, Widespread Panic played New York rock: the Ramones' "Pet Sematary," "Beat on the Brat" and "I Wanna Be Sedated," Lou Reed's "Vicious" and Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime." John Bell, the band's lead singer and rhythm guitarist, was costumed for Halloween as the Statue of Liberty.

Taking Minimalism to the Maximum

By BEN RATLIFF

Lots of music-makers are indoor types, but a special class of inward-looking, elliptically expressive person records for Drag City, the Chicago record label that specializes in pop minimalism. It had a six-hour showcase at Tramps on Wednesday for the CMJ festival, and the deep-seated intellectual sheen on the musicians and the presentation transcended collegiate rock; it was more like graduate school rock.

Warren Haynes

In Address, Obama Highlights Tax Reductions

By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

WASHINGTON — President Obama said Saturday that the Treasury Department had begun to direct its employees to reduce taxes from the paychecks of workers, a move that should increase the take-home pay for typical families by at least $65 a month.

Obama Planning to Slash Deficit, Despite Stimulus Spending

By JACKIE CALMES
Published: February 21, 2009
WASHINGTON — After a string of costly bailout and stimulus measures, President Obama will set a goal this week to cut the annual deficit at least in half by the end of his term, administration officials said. The reduction would come in large part through Iraq troop withdrawals and higher taxes on the wealthy.

Banking on the Brink

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: February 22, 2009

Comrade Greenspan wants us to seize the economy’s commanding heights.

O.K., not exactly. What Alan Greenspan, the former Federal Reserve chairman — and a staunch defender of free markets — actually said was, “It may be necessary to temporarily nationalize some banks in order to facilitate a swift and orderly restructuring.” I agree.

First, some major banks are dangerously close to the edge — in fact, they would have failed already if investors didn’t expect the government to rescue them if necessary.

Second, banks must be rescued. The collapse of Lehman Brothers almost destroyed the world financial system, and we can’t risk letting much bigger institutions like Citigroup or Bank of America implode.

Third, while banks must be rescued, the U.S. government can’t afford, fiscally or politically, to bestow huge gifts on bank shareholders.

The Obama administration, says Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman, believes “that a privately held banking system is the correct way to go.” So do we all. But what we have now isn’t private enterprise, it’s lemon socialism: banks get the upside but taxpayers bear the risks. And it’s perpetuating zombie banks, blocking economic recovery.

What we want is a system in which banks own the downs as well as the ups. And the road to that system runs through nationalization.

Drive By Truckers
